And this perspective makes all the difference in the world. Not only to their tweeting experience, but their approach to life in general.

Have you ever worked with people who have neither? I’m not pointing fingers or anything, but …

I guess I don’t get it. There is so much more to life. There are so many more lives to live. There is so much to be thankful for when you are a pet, a person with pets, or a person with pets and kids. Why would you want to live life as a person with neither? Oh, I AM biased. But I’m just sayin…

The Top Points from Whippet Snippets. Go see the entire post at http://bit.ly/good-dog

Ribsy would like to offer a few tips on how to be a good dog on Twitter:

1) Be open to other species. At first Ribsy had a no-cat rule. But what the heck, some cats can be pretty darn intelligent. As @officecat stated, “Decided to follow lots of dogs…all will like me but I like to keep friends close and enemies closer.” Ribsy even follows a squirrel – talk about the barriers breaking down.

2) Go ahead and drool. There are rock stars in the dog world. Down boy. Don’t expect a direct connection to the stars. @cesarmillan might not follow you back. Neither might @AnimalPlanet nor @snoopdogg. (@guykawasaki – woof out to Guy! – is pretty good at following you back though. So is @BarackObama if you want some Twitter dog cred.) On the upside, you may be the first to hear about their latest thoughts and not-so-news, no matter how trivial or insignificant they may seem. And isn’t that what celebrity worship is all about? (Speaking of which, look at all the celebrites who Twitter!)

3) Take naps. No dog should deprive themselves of their 19-hour a day beauty sleep for the sake of Twitter. Download a client such as Twhirl or Tweetdeck to make sorting through all the messages easier.

4) Try not to whine when you lose followers. It’s not the way your butt smells. Dogs follow and unfollow all the time. Recall the last time that you were at the park. When you first arrived, a lot of dogs were probably circling you, in your face, checking you out. After a while, they know what you’re all about. And frankly, you’re just not their running style. So they stopped paying attention to you. That’s how it goes on Twitter.

5) Sniff out answers. If another dog is looking for help with issues on training their human, or for help on the best doggy Internet websites, throw them a helpful bone if you can. Dogs have to stick together, even on Twitter.

6) Be friendly. Try talking to other dogs you follow, by @ replying to them. It’s like giving them a virtual tail wag to let them know you’re listening, and as a fellow dog, you understand their plights about being left alone or getting shooed off the bed.

7) Don’t bark incessantly. You hear about some major dog news from one of your followers. You decide to rebark (retweet) it your followers. Problem is, that news was like two hours ago. Which in Twitter time, means it’s yesterday’s discarded chew toy. Try doing a quick search or visit a site like Tweetmeme to see if’s already been barked loud and clear over the Twittersphere.

"Why would humans help animals voice themselves on twitter?" I mean, don't the animals have better things to do? And maybe the humans should get a life. What's up with this whole pet tweeting thing?

A better question might be “Why would humans help animals voice themselves on twitter?” I mean, don’t the animals have better things to do? And maybe the humans should get a life. What’s up with this whole pet tweeting thing?

A short personal story: A cat named Peter joined me when I was about 21 and going through some tough times. 18 years later Peter moved on into the spirit world and his body was buried in the back yard. His spirit never ceased caring for me. And if I imagine him, or see a picture of him, I can still feel my love for him. More so than pictures of dead human relatives. Something about Peter has stayed in my heart. As pure love, pet love, unattached love, what ever you want to call it.

About a seven months ago I found Sockington on twitter and subscribed to his tweets. Something about his attitude (or cattitude) always tickled me. It wasn’t about Peter at that point at all.

And then… I have no idea why, I decided to voice Peter’s encouragements via twitter as ghostofpeter. And after one or two posts I was done with that idea. I mean, “why?”

But socksamillion kept poping up in my tweetstream. And every now and then I would get a real laugh or a unique perspective that brought some new awarenss to my human life.

And then during Christmas a dinner with a close group of friends the Pettweets idea was voiced for the first time. At that time I knew there were other pet tweeters. But Sockinton was the only one I had really listened to. My friend, Amy Mills, is the Executive Director for a non-profit called EmanciPET. And they keep animals out of pet shelters and out of the gas chambers of same shelters, by offering spaying and neutering services for cheap.

So that fewer unwanted pets are born and thus fewer unwanted pets are put to sleep. It’s a huge deal.

And Pettweets.org seemed like a simple way I could contribute to their awareness campaign. Who knew what I would find.

Pets are tweeting in all languages from all over the earth. And while cats are the dominate voice, there are lots and lots of animal tweeters. And some are funny, some are serious, some are irreverant and some are gross. But they are all driven from some human passion and love of the animals that are “voiced.”

So if you’ve ever sounded out your dog’s voice as he says “Thank you thank you thank you…” after you give him a table scrap, you will understand what pettweeting is all about.

And who knows, perhaps you pet’s voices will want to come on line as well.

Either way, listen to the animals. They are speaking in profound ways, both on twitter and in all of our lives. We have much to learn.

Namasté,
